Celeb Ghost-Tweeters: Boo or Bravo?
Posted Tuesday, February 24, 2009 · CommentsIt seems to defeat the community-connected nature of micro-blogging. But Newsweek reports that ghost bloggers write many a celeb Twitter post.
I can understand President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown hiring ghost writers to pen their Tweets and update their Facebook pages.
But it would be challenging to impersonate a celeb and keep your fans updated on the minutia of your daily life (unless, perhaps, you’re the celeb’s personal assistant).
A big part of what makes Twitter addicting for its 6 million or so members is its reality show nature – you can peek into people’s lives and find out exactly what’s going on in their head. Not their ghost writer’s head. And not what their ghost writer thinks is going on in their head.
I asked my Twitter followers:
If you knew that a celeb you follow on Twitter had hired a ghost-tweeter to post on their behalf, would you un-follow that celeb?
Here are their responses:
- AllisterF – I’d unfollow. If it’s not authentic, I’m not interested.
- marykw – I don’t follow WHO is talking, I follow WHAT is being talked about – celeb or not, name doesn’t matter
- JMcC – I would unfollow. Don’t mind celebs like Britney Spears who are upfront about it. Boils down to honesty.
- newmediajim – oh gosh i wouldn’t know, but i’d imagine that it would be based on the quality of the content.
- karenrobbins -Would not follow ghost-tweets. Grisham’s publisher set up his FB. He has no clue what’s on it according to interview on Today show.
- guy1067 – Depends if the tweets r worth reading, find out who the ghost writer is & follow them instead. Sad comment on the celeb tho.
- susan_stewart – I’m not sure I’d unfollow — but I sure would ask where can I land that gig?
- badgergravling – I’d unfollow. The point is real interaction. Even if most celebs can’t respond to every message…
- TalkInc – I would assume 99% have ghost-tweeters. I don’t follow celebs, so could be 99% wrong.
What about you? What do you think of the whole ghost-tweeting thing?
P.S. I’m not a celeb, and I DO write all my own tweets. Hope you’ll follow me @bloggingbistro.
