How Well Does Your Logo Work? Just Ask a 5-Year-Old

Ever wondered what message your business’s logo sends?

Designer Adam Ladd showed logos of several major brands to his 5-year-old daughter and recorded her responses to each.

This is one of the most powerful and entertaining videos I’ve discovered on the topic of brand messaging. It helped me re-think the way images instantly impact us. Definitely worth 2 minutes of your time.

Apple, Bell, GE, Greyhound, Target were literally clear. Many of the other symbols, not all, are clear only because I’ve come to know them: Oh, I know that one! Seen it around for years.

But if you were to list the organizations and ask me to tell you what their logos are, I may be slow on the draw with some, such as Disney: I always thought their logo was the castle, not the “D”. (And I used to work at Disneyland.) But seriously, “D” could be just about anybody or anything. I’m guess I’m alone on that one, right? I hate that!

This was precious. She had me laughing and thinking. Very helpful. Thank you, Adam and daughter.

I think Chili’s is the best and Boeing is the worst. (It’s cool looking but conveys nothing.)

Katherine — I’ll be sure to tell Boeing, as I can almost see the gigantic Boeing plant from my house (“World’s largest building, by volume”).

They’ll be sad, as they probably spent millions on their logo. Maybe they’ll hire us to create a new one for them?!
