Both blogging and mobile web surfing have become increasingly popular. However, these two activities do not always go well together. The often-cluttered WYSIWYG editors and setting menus used in most blogging platforms are designed for desktops.

Many find trying to blog directly from a desktop-oriented website on a mobile platform is an exercise in frustration. However, many mobile apps have been created to fill this void, and bloggers have a number of options available for convenient mobile blogging. These include WordPress, iBlogger, Blogger, BlogPress, Tumblr, TypePad, and Squarespace.

1.  WordPress

The leading blog and content management system has released free apps for many different smart phones. These smart phone platforms are Android, iOS, Blackberry, Windows Phone 7, Nokia, and WebOS.

Essentially, no matter what kind of operating system your smart phone uses, you will be able to contribute in a convenient manner to your WordPress site. WordPress for iOS enables the user to make and edit posts, upload photos taken with their device, and manage blog comments. The WordPress programs on other platforms provide similar functionality.

2.  iBlogger

iBlogger touts itself as the first app created especially for blogging on an iPhone. It is an independent app that can upload to a number of blogging platforms, such as WordPress, Drupal, TypePad, and Expression Engine.

It is integrated with Google Picasa, which allows the user to upload and embed pictures from their Picasa account. iBlogger posts can be expertly tailored with CSS to match your standard blog theme or to divert from or add onto it in an organized way. iBlogger also integrates with any blog’s Lightbox 2 installation, which allows pictures to be presented in a more attractive and convenient psuedo-popup format.

3.  Blogger

Blogger offers an Android app that makes mobile Blogger use easy. The user can create, edit, and publish posts, and upload photos. The app supports use of multiple Blogger accounts, which can easily be toggled between.

4.  BlogPress

BlogPress is a highly-rated iPhone blogging app. Like iBlogger, it is independent of any platform, and can be used to make posts on such platforms as Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress.

5.  Tumblr

Tumblr’s official app allows access to most of Tumblr’s features in a sleek and stylish layout befitting of Tumblr’s desktop aesthetic. Just like the desktop version, the main feed updates as the user scrolls down. Posts can be made, read, and reblogged. The Tumblr program is a solid way to not just contribute to one’s one Tumblr account but also to enjoy Tumblr as a whole.

6.  TypePad

Typepad is another blogging platform with its own iOS and Android apps. Users can make and edit posts on their TypePad accounts, and add photos that can be resized and cropped within the TypePad app.

7.  Squarespace

Squarespace is a web design company that offers hosting, design, and maintenance in low-priced package deals. They also provide an iOS app for uploading to multiple blogging platforms. Like Tumblr’s app, it allows users to browse others’ blogs in addition to working on their own.
