Want a Blog Makeover? Submit it to our Makeover Monday Challenge

I’m launching a new regular feature called Makeover Monday. Here’s how it works:

  1. If your blog needs a makeover, submit its URL in the comments area of this post.
  2. Every Monday on my blog, I’ll review one reader blog and offer suggestions for things you can improve. Readers will be invited to share their opinions about the blog makeover of the week, as well. It’s like getting a free consult!
  3. The next step is up to you – you can make the changes yourself, or you can hire Blogging Bistro to do it for you  (we’ve teamed up with several fab graphic designers who work wonders on blogs and Websites).

From time to time, we’ll feature BEFORE and AFTER screenshots of our readers’ made-over blogs (along with a link to your blog). That way, we can all learn with and from one another.

Here are a couple of blog makeovers we’ve recently featured:

Don’t be shy – enter your blog in the Makeover Monday Challenge right now!

I would LOVE to have a make-over on my blog. I'm doing a one-year Bible study through the Chronological Bible so I post each day Monday through Friday. Here is my URL
    dianneguthmuller.wordpress.com

    Thank you for your consideration!

    Blessings!

Thanks for your submissions, Guillermo and dianneguthmuller. I'll schedule you for our first two rounds of Makeover Mondays. You can expect to see the first review Monday, April 26. Readers, keep posting your blog URLs and a brief description — I'll add your blog to the Makeover list, too!

Laura, that's great of you to consider blog makeovers! I know mine is in dire need of some updates but I'm not sure where to begin. Style, format, design, etc. Would love your input. I feel like I have some great content (though much of it is buried) and it's updated at least several times a week.
    Best,
    Lori Lowe

    Would certainly appreciate any suggestions…

I am in the process of moving my blog to a paid hosting site. I have done some design work myself. I bought a template from a template company and am slowly customizing. It is a bit overwhelming. Eventually I would like to feature reviews of other bloggers/writers sites as a service to my many writing friends. You can see the work-in-progress here: http://typingonehanded.com. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

My son is an artist and web designer, and made one comment on my blog (“too busy”) and ironically he's been too busy for input/a makeover on my blog. So here I am. Wondering what your thoughts would be. I also don't think my blog is appropriately titled, but there you go.

My blog gives me a Feedburner Feed Medic message: Error getting URL: 999 – unknown. I then go to Feed Validator (per their instructions) and it looks like someone has gone wild with a yellow highlight pen! It is eventually cleared by Feedburner, yet I know it interupts the feed to my readers…causing some to unsubscribe?

I don't understand the 'lingo' and it seems my blog needs a 'guts' makeover. Help!

  • http://bloggingbistro.com/ Laura Christianson

Donna, I'm afraid you'll have to troubleshoot your Feedburner issue directly with the folks at Feedburner — it sounds as if your feed might not be set up correctly.

To have your blog be considered for a makeover, please submit a link to it and tell us a tiny bit about your goals in writing it and perhaps, what you'd most like help with.

http://www.gigimurfitt.blogspot.com could use a makeover. Love the before and after shots. This blog is my one year walk through the God Calling devotional book. I post a new devotional every day based on the theme of the devotion in God Calling which was written in 1935. I'm amazed at how relevant the devotions are today even though written 75 years ago. But that's how God's Word is – Alive!

I love a good Barista! Perhaps you could take a look at http://www.momswithgrace.wordpress.com for a Monday Makeover. I'm committed to blogging once a week, after realizing twice a week was overwhelming with my workload. This type of media is new to me and I've got a lot to learn about making the most of blog content, where to submit blogs for more readership, how to link to social media sites. The list goes on. Thanks for your time!

Oops, forgot to give you a brief description of my blog. It's title, Audience of One, describes my desire to live and write to please and honor God. Most of my posts center around the writing life, but I also throw in occasional humor articles and devotionals I've written. My regular Monday feature is called, “What About You?” where I ask readers a question such as, “What was your favorite toy as a child?” or “What do you consider the ideal meal?”

    Thanks again,
    Jen

It would be a belated birthday gift to get a blog makeover! I'm a working-from-home (medical transcription) mother of 4 boys; ages 20, 17, 11, and 4. I write a weekly humor column for a newspaper and blog for two other websites. As I post the columns, in addition to other content, on my blog, I would so appreciate some ideas on how to make it look more professional as I'm hoping to attract more attention from editors and agents. The name of the blog is “The Natives are Getting Restless.” The URL is http://www.momof4braves.blogspot.com.

Please consider my blog(s). I have several and they can all be accessed from my personal web page http://www.janicedgreen.com. If you prefer to consider only one of these blogs, please do http://www.honeycombkids.com/blog

I didn't explain the blog… Honeycomb Kids is for encouraging children to read the Bible. It is a sister blog to Honeycomb Families which is for encouraging parents to discuss the Bible with their children at home. These pages will eventually be used to help market my Bible story books if/when they are published. They will also carry a quilt appliqué theme in the book illustrations.

I’m willing to ‘woman-up’ for a blog makeover critique. I have WordPress hosted on Hostgator, do postings that inform and help parents and grandparents, sell my re-issued Christian children’s books (which means pointing from my blog to another website with shopping cart) and offer free downloads on the blog.

I read your 8 Great Reasons to Embed Your Blog on Your Web site, and Mark Hancock stated:

“I addressed this by continuing to post to my Blogger site at the same time that I post to my self-hosted site. On Blogger I post only a little of the post, usually the first sentence or two, then I provide a link to “read more” that takes my reader to the new site.” I did not do this and have lost a lot of readers. Is it possible to pick them back up since I’m still pointing from my old Blogger site?

  • http://bloggingbistro.com/ Laura Christianson

I’ll add you to the ever-expanding list of requests, Donna. I’ve been holding off on doing makeovers for a while because I’ve been giving my own website and blog a makeover!

You say: I did not do this and have lost a lot of readers. Is it possible to pick them back up since I’m still pointing from my old Blogger site?

Are you saying that your Blogger site is still active? If so, you might try Mark’s technique. While you’re at it, give your readers the URL so they can subscribe to the blog feed at your WordPress blog. That way, you won’t lose them.

  • http://bloggingbistro.com/ Laura Christianson

    Donna,

I’ll need the URL for your blog to enter you in the makeover challenge.

Are you still adding people to the list? I’d love to know what you think of mine, as I find it really hard to work out what’s working and what isn’t, and I’m afraid it’s getting too cluttered. I do book, TV and movie reviews related to ancient history in popular culture.

Yes, I am Juliette. I do the makeovers sporadically, as I have time, but I’ll add your blog to the queue.
